Final Draft: Our Proposal
What
"Experience a Field Trip....Create A Digital Experience....Share Your Experiences with the World!"

Students, teachers and community members will share learning experiences through digital media. Intercommunication through digital resources will be an integral part of this collaboration. We will also provide opportunities for others to contribute to our archive or respository of digital experiences through watching online tutorials and granting space for "experience "exchanges.

Why
We are all limited by time and space. Although the Internet in the recent years have afforded us unbelievable breakthroughs to these limitations, we are still all trying to participate in as many experiences around the world. We hope to expand our mini universe and allow a community of sharers of experiences. The digital experiences posted in our wiki will provide opportunities for students to learn and explore locations which they would not be able to visit in person. Currently, the virtual field trips found online are designed more like "webquests", just linking the students to information and various sites about a particular location. Our wiki goes one step further and provides a way for students to get the real "flavor" of a place, experiencing the sights and sounds themselves in a digital, easy to navigate, environment. Our wiki serves to promote 21st century literacy skills by incorporating technology tools into classroom curriculum. In addition, we are bringing more authentic experiences into the various content areas.

How
We will host a wikispace titled "Digital Experiences" with three components. The first component will be the "Experience" page, which will serve as scaffolding for our future contributors. On this page we have shared our own experiences we created digitally with various free online tools. Examples will include virtual trips to a campus, museums, and worldwide locations of interest.

The second component will be the "Create" page, which will contain tutorials about using the various Web 2.0 tools contained on the "Experience" page. By visiting our "Create" page, wiki visitors will be able to view the criteria necessary for posting their own work, and helpful videos to guide them in using the tool of their choice. This page will assist interested participants in the many ways to create products to post and share with others.

The third and final component will be the "Share" page, which will be where viewers such as teachers, students, or digital explorers can share their experiences and reactions during and or after an actual field trip. This last component will help to break down the physical limitations to experience different parts of the world, through a digitial environment.

  • Our project includes children as desired, vital and contributing partners with others in a learning community.
  • It naturally links people of all ages and backgrounds with cultural and community resources on Long Island and the world too!
  • It has components that would change or be dramatically enhanced with powerful tools of electronic communications and multimedia expressioning being used well.
  • It crosses academic disciplines often blurring the very sense of a particular discipline and building a wholistic, natural learning experience.
  • It is energizing and intrinsically motivating for children and adults.
  • NYS curriculum and standards fit naturally within the confines of this project.

NETS-T
1. As educators we will Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity through the digital media in which both the teachers and students create, view, and react to.
2. This project is Designed and Developed in order to create Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments for students and teachers.
3. The team members with in the group are Modeling Digital-Age Work and Learning through the where in the world have you been as well as the how-to videos posted on the site.
4. Teachers Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility by allowing others to share and comment on the wiki by providing rules for comments and postings.
5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership by opening the wiki to other schools and teachers in hopes to aide with the digital divide and bring teachers and students up to speed with the growing technologies.

Teachers, students and the educational community at large, will all be participants in this collaborative project. The internal task organization of our project is as follows, with respect to individual contributions to our library of digital experiences, in addition to the collaborative work of creating and maintaining this wiki:

When
Everything about our project is ongoing. We are constantly changing different aspects of our proposal, our project, our ideas. We plan to reconvene weekly to compare and evaluate our mini-group products. Little by little, we will be putting our work-in-progress into a common wiki.

How Assessed
Feedback through online surveys, testimonials and interviews uploaded onto the webpage, blogs, online chats, and email. We can also ask colleagues to visit our collaboration website and provide feedback on our project. The responses of fellow teachers will help us work out the practical aspects of our project. We can also solicit our colleagues to volunteer their classes to participate in online activities and assessments of our project.
